MURMUR aims to visualise the media attention on the urban space, in order to redraw a map of the city based on what is being said on each street.

The goal of this project is to understand and visualise how different media describe the urban space trough the attention that is paid on each street of the city. Official news, blog and personal website, thematic media will be monitored to generate maps that highlight the patterns of perception of the urban space. This mapping will lead to the creation of an atlas that will monitor in time the changing perception of the city areas. The atlas will produce different maps based on different themes, sources and time.

For the project we would appreciate the collaboration of people with valuable skills in:
- Management of GIS data
- PHP+SQL programming. Preferably with experience in parsing of rss data and google queries
- Text Analysis or similar fields. (Nothing too fancy..)
- ActionScript 3 scripting
- Spanish new/old media consultant

Feel free to ask any questions. See you soon!

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

This looks pretty interesting! If you haven't figured out your workflow for feed-parsing & recombination perhaps Yahoo Pipes could be of use to you.

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

Hi Greg,
thanks for the suggestion, we're looking into it, but we'll probably need something more flexible.
It'd also be great if we could find somebody with some experience in (basic) Text Analysis or similar fields.

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

hi there, your project seems to be very interesting. i'd like to apply for collaboration, as i've been doing similar research, despite not having experience with programing. I'm graduated and have a masters in Journalism. At the moment, I've done recently an academic year at Universidad de Navarra (Spain), which is part of my doctorate course in media effects and TICs. At the moment, I'm in Brazil working on my thesis. in the doctorate, I've been working with applied research on influence and patterns of information consumption in Spain and Brazil. I have presented three papers in the area in Portugal, England and Spain, respectively, and have known media professionals who have become aware of the necessity to develop methods of tracking and analyzing information consumption on the internet, seeking to know the audience according to a long tail perspective. I have tried to produce and adapt research designs to understand patterns of information consumption through network and content analysis. I don't know if you're looking for people with all of those skills above, but i think i could help with text analysis and consultancy. i don't know if it would be possible to work far away from you...looking forward to hearing from you.
all the best,
jan

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

Hi jan,
thanks for writing.
Of course your competences seem to be very relevant for our project, and we'd be happy to work with you on this. Your skills and competences would be useful right from the beginning of the project to define media sources to be taken into consideration, research and content analysis strategies. Of course it would be best if you could come to Madrid for the workshop and work on this with us right from the beginning, but if this isn't possible we'll try to find some other ways of collaboration.
Since we come from different backgrounds, it would be great if you could share some of your ideas with us about how you envision this maps/visualizations.
What would you like to emerge from the map? What would you like to see? Any ideas on what aspects of media attention we should focus on?

Of course these questions are open to everybody..

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

Hi, your project is amazing and I'd like to collaborate. My actual experience as Android developer on osm mapping and my interest in Scriptographer scripting could be useful.
Here my Android open source project on OSM: http://code.google.com/p/android-openst … navigator/

Re: MURMUR (call for collaborators)

Hi Daniele,
That's exactly the kind of experience we need for the project! We too are looking into openstreetmaps and some knowledge in the field of GIS and mapping would be greatly appreciated. We really look forward to see you in Madrid to collaborate on the project. Please have a look at the Visualizar '08 site for information and for making an official request for collaboration.

See you soon,
WAE
